Celebrating NAIDOC Week

CELEBRATING NAIDOC WEEK

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held around the country each year from the 7th - 14th July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.

This year’s theme is – Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future and is celebrated not just in our Indigenous communities but also across community organisations, local councils, workplaces, schools and sporting groups.

Creating awareness of local NAIDOC Week activities provides Hastings Deering the perfect opportunity to be a respectful, welcoming and understanding workforce able to work and engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

It also reinforces Hastings Deering’s commitment to reconciliation. Hastings Deering is currently in the process of developing our first Reconciliation Action Plan and NAIDOC Week is another opportunity to raise awareness of our reconciliation journey.

Hastings Deering is a proud partner of the Brisbane Lions and both organisations actively embrace challenges focused around diversity and inclusion, aligning to our ‘Together as One’ program. Like Hastings Deering, many players at the Brisbane Lions come from diverse backgrounds, and we were honoured to receive the following message from Indigenous player, Allen Christensen:
